Character Profiles: Akomera

Characters:

Queen Imau I Jiomosu Dantaoji
Queen Kurine Queen Imau II
Shinorutei Dantaoji Akemi

About the setting:

Akomera is technically just one kingdom in this fantasy world, but since the world doesn’t have a name at this time and Akomera is the main focus of all stories thus far, there you go. I’ve got some Rurouni Kenshin fanfiction going, some Gundam Wing fanfiction planned, and a lot of original stuff either actively in the works or plotted out.

This land is peninsular and subequatorial — so wet, warm, and green. Technologically they’re in the usual medieval/Renaissance-blend-style era. Socially they are (among other things, of course) egalitarian when it comes to gender, and being bisexual is considered the norm.

The overgarment typically worn in this kingdom, called a shiiya, is a long, loose dress/tunic usually falling to the thighs or lower with full-length sleeves hanging from the upper arm or shoulder. A royal shiiya is generally decorated with bands or stripes of different colors, often metallic, and has large, visible buttons on the sleeves. Underneath the shiiya, a light, sleeveless shirt is generally worn.

Queen Imau I

Featured in Façade of Perfection

Relationships: Briefly married to Jiomosu (arranged marriage; she never loved him, and always treated him very coldly); mother of Kurine

Personality: Very cold, more intellectual than emotional; what she does feel is kept carefully hidden and controlled inside her; intelligent, calculating, practical

Profession/Abilities: Imau is well-organized, meticulous, and a very good leader

Age: Became queen at the age of twelve; married Jiomosu when she was twenty; died at twenty-one giving birth to Kurine

Height: Short

Build: Slender, thin, delicate

Skin: Light brown

Hair: Black, wavy; falls to mid-back; usually tied up in some tight yet elegant style

Eyes: Grey

Clothes: Imau prefers black, white, grey, and silver, but will sometimes wear subdued, greyish colors (usually warm colors) as well. Under her royal shiiya she would wear tights or leave her legs bare, and would prefer relatively small and light shoes: lace-up, with folded tops; fairly simple, though they might have a decorative stripe or ornament to match her shiiya. She would also wear the crown pictured in her reference image, and might wear a decorative cape matching her shiiya as well.

Jiomosu Dantaoji

Featured in Façade of Perfection

Relationships: Briefly married to Imau (though his attachment to her is one-sided and she treats him, if possible, more coldly than anyone else); father of Kurine, who also treats him coolly though she does love him.

Personality: Practical but laid-back; intelligent but slightly scatter-brained; friendly, loving, and sympathetic

Profession/Abilities: Jiomosu is first the dantaoji (ruling monarch’s spouse) and, after the death of his wife, regent for his daughter until she comes of age. He is a fairly good ruler.

Age: Became engaged to Imau and came to live in the royal palace at the age of 10; married Imau and became dantaoji at the age of 18; ruled as regent for his daughter Kurine from age 19 to age 37; 41 in Façade of Perfection; died at age 68

Height: Medium

Build: Medium, not particularly muscular

Skin: Light brown

Hair: Black (starts to go grey in his late thirties), straight; falls to mid-back; usually hangs loose

Eyes: Brown

Clothes: Jiomosu tends to wear warm colors, especially yellows. Under his royal shiiya he would wear tights or leave his legs bare, and would prefer light, lace-up boots with folded tops (fairly simple, though they might have a decorative stripe or ornament to match his shiiya).

Queen Kurine

Featured in Façade of Perfection

Relationships: Daughter of Imau and Jiomosu; somewhat cool with her father, who understands that this is just her way.

Personality: Cool, more intellectual than emotional, though underneath not without compassion or interest; intelligent, calculating, practical; a good, savvy leader

Profession/Abilities: Kurine is well-organized, meticulous, and a very good leader.

Age: Crowned at age 18; 22 in Façade of Perfection; married at 23; died at 73

Height: Medium

Build: Slender, fairly delicate

Skin: Light brown

Hair: Black, straight; falls to mid-back; sometimes loose, sometimes tied back/up in a simple tail, braid, or bun

Eyes: Grey

Clothes: Kurine tends to wear greys and greyish browns along with black and silver. Under her royal shiiya she would wear tights or leave her legs bare, and relatively small and light, lace-up shoes with folded tops (fairly simple, though they might have a decorative stripe or ornament to match her shiiya). As queen, she would also wear the crown pictured in her reference image, and might wear a decorative cape matching her shiiya as well.

Queen Imau II

Featured in nothing yet, though she is (or will be) mentioned in Heretic’s Reward

Relationships: Married to Shinorutei, whose love she won after great effort and persistence; mother of King Kenshin II, of whom she was prodigiously proud and whom she probably would have spoiled if she’d lived long enough

Personality: Considerate and observant of others; somewhat emotionally reactive, but generally fairly calm; dedicated to doing what she believes is right and often obnoxiously dogmatic about it; persistent to the point of stubbornness

Profession/Abilities: Imau studied swordsmanship throughout her teenage years and continued practicing up until her death; she is very skilled at quick-moving, decisive combat. As she sometimes has a tendency to jump to conclusions and reach decisions without as much thought as she should really give them, she is not as skilled a queen as she could be; however, her strong moral center and sense of compassion keep her from making any huge mistakes.

Age: Married Shinorutei at 19; crowned at 20; son was born when she was 26; died at 33

Height: Short

Build: Medium; fairly big bust

Skin: Light brown

Hair: Red; falls to lower back and typically tied in a low, loose ponytail or braided; thick, jagged bangs

Eyes: Orange

Clothes: Under her royal shiiya she would wear trousers and either flat shoes or boots (depending on what she’s up to). She might also wear a decorative cape to match her shiiya, and would almost never be seen without her sword at her side.

(Imau, paler than she really should be, is pictured here with Seijuurou. Note that shiiya sleeves such as he is wearing, all puffed and with big ol’ cuffs, have gone out of style at this point to be replaced by the more flattish sleeves Imau has on.)

Shinorutei Dantaoji

Featured in Heretic’s Reward (eventually)

Relationships: Married to Queen Imau II, who won her love after great effort and persistence; mother of King Kenshin II, to whom she is a devoted and very rational parent

Personality: Practical, calm, and candid; cool under pressure; likes to make deadpan jokes

Profession/Abilities: Noru grew up as a sailor on her father’s merchant ship, and is a skilled seawoman. She also acted as her son’s regent after her wife the queen died but before the young new king was old enough to rule the kingdom himself; Noru doesn’t feel she did a terribly good job at this, but she wasn’t too bad. Once Kenshin was old enough to rule on his own, Noru went back to sea and took over the captaincy of her father’s ship Yujuui Nikamoru.

Age: Married Imau at 23; became dantaoji (ruling monarch’s spouse) at 24; son born when she was 30; widowed at 37; 57 in Heretic’s Reward

Height: The tall end of medium

Build: Compact; narrow shoulders; small bust

Skin: Light brown

Hair: Black (starts going grey in her early 30’s); falls to mid-back, and she usually keeps it up in a high ponytail; long, uneven bangs; generally fairly ragged

Eyes: Brown

Clothes: Under the royal shiiya Noru would often wear during her years as dantaoji or regent, she would prefer tights or bare legs, and when she couldn’t get away with bare feet would wear flat shoes.

Akomerai sailors (a group with which Noru identifies far more than with the nobility) tend to wear a shiiya with nothing underneath but bandage-like wraps — which wraps they also use in place of belts, to protect their arms and legs at need, to tie back their sleeves to keep them out of the way, and to gird up the lower half of the shiiya.

Noru likes to wear big earrings. After the death of her wife, she usually also wears a gold pendant with the symbol of the Baranor’mei royal family on a sturdy gold chain.

Akemi

Relationships: Best friends with Queen Imau II for many years

Personality: Blunt, sometimes a little oblivious, absolutely loyal, somewhat frivolous

Profession/Abilities: Akemi is a royal knight and a competent swordswoman

Age: A few years older than Imau

Height: Tall

Build: Medium, muscular, small bust

Skin: Light brown

Hair: Dark brown, straight, falls to her calves when loose. She usually keeps it up in a heavy pony-tail and a few artistic braids.

Eyes: Brown

Clothes: While on duty, Akemi wears the uniform of a royal knight — a white shiiya with the crest of the Barenor’mei royal family on a grey diamond, black trousers and boots — and carries her sword. Off duty, however, Akemi, who adores clothing, might be seen in any color or cut of shiiya combined with whatever lower garments she thinks best match.

(Eventually, largely at Akemi’s insistence, the out-of-fashion sleeves/cuffs of the royal knight shiiyao were updated to the latest design; obviously this picture came before that. If you want a color reference of a royal knight shiiya, see Hajime here.)
